sad day – my nano is broken

my poor nano

sigh – tomorrow it’s off to the apple store to see if they’ll replace this. i measured, it fell all of 2 feet, a portable device should not suffer catastrophic failure from such a relatively minor fall.

i’ll post tomorrow with the results of my beg-a-thon at the apple store

UPDATE:

i went directly to the apple store today and was unsuccessful in convincing them to help me. i guess i shouldn’t be surprised, the folk at the store aren’t exactly empowered to fix customer relations issues.

i’m on the phone with apple support, the 1st level tech, after seeing this photo, told me “that should not happen with an ipod no matter how far it drops” and i’m currently on hold waiting for the 2nd tier support who has the authority to do something about this. cautiously optimistic that apple will fix this problem.

UPDATE 2:

need to call back tomorrow and get in touch with customer relations. =(

UPDATE 3:

Apple will repair my ipod, but i did have the misfortune of having to talk to the crabbiest person at Apple (Janet from customer relations). they’re going to ship me a box, i’m going to put the nano in it, and at some undetermined point in the future i should get my purple nano back… after which i will go out and buy myself one of those rubberized cases. in the meantime, i’ll use my first gen ipod nano, the one that is damn near indestructible.

so, consider my story a warning, the new nanos are beautiful but extremely FRAGILE

i should note that the nano does in fact still work, but i don’t think i want to stick it in my pocket as is.

if anyone has any recommendations on a good protective case that doesn’t add too much bulk i’m all ears

So it’s display cover is GLASS, or is it shattered plastic?? No prior iPod has ever had a glass display cover before.

it’s glass, not plastic. i think the iphone and ipod touch are also glass, but they’ve got some sort of film on them that stops them from shattering in the same way when dropped (they’ll crack, but the glass stays together)

Here’s the thing about these new devices, the aluminum is too soft and dents way too easily. My little square nano is going in for repairs because the hard drive is not working too.

The old Walkmans would really only have hinges breaking, but they could withstand the toughest drop. I’m not sure why Apple continues to push it’s ‘dent easily’ designs on laptops and portable devices. They scuff and dent way too easily. Good for recycling, but bad for consumers who have to ‘baby’ their equipment. They still don’t get that part of the equation.

    Hope your repairs go well!

My iPod just fell from about the same distance (still looking for rule, but it looks like 2 feet) and it shattered and I got shards of glass on my hand. VERY dangerous product. I went to the Apple store and they not only denied the product is designed wrong, they cancelled my warranty which is only about 3 months old. I’m VERY pissed off about this.
How long did it take you to get it fixed?
